Supporting Prostate Cancer Awareness: A Rotary Initiative with "Facing The Tiger"
In 1997, the Rotary Foundation was established by Roger Climpson of the Lane Cove Rotary Club. Over the years, it has evolved into a corporation, and Rotary continues to maintain representation on its Board. True to its mission, the Foundation focuses on supporting local initiatives wherever possible.
Recently, the Rotary Club engaged with local prostate cancer nurses to identify specific needs. During these discussions, the nurses highlighted the value of a book titled Facing The Tiger by a psychologist, designed to help patients and their partners cope with the challenges of prostate cancer. In response, the Rotary Club sourced 60 copies of the book to support this effort. Some books have already been delivered to the nurses for direct distribution to patients, while others have been distributed to individuals in need. Copies are available for purchase at $30.
Expanding Impact Through the Red Socks Project
To broaden its impact, the Rotary Club plans to integrate the distribution of Facing The Tiger into the Red Socks Project, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and support for prostate cancer. The books will be used in a variety of ways:
- Donated to local Prostate Support Groups to create a lending library for members.
- Distributed by other Rotary Clubs in collaboration with Prostate Nurses across the district.
- Offered for sale as part of fundraising and awareness campaigns.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
Every copy of Facing The Tiger purchased supports the Prostate Cancer Foundation, as the author donates all royalties to the organization. This aligns perfectly with the Rotary Club’s dual mission of raising awareness and providing direct support to individuals affected by prostate cancer.
If you or someone you know could benefit from this essential resource, or if you are interested in purchasing a copy, please contact Rotary through the Rotary Red Socks website. Your support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing prostate cancer.
